The problem with that is the idea that everyone is either left or right, and that those terms are cut in granite.
The press basically is a lot of things. However, what they do less and less of is investigate. If some corporation or government hands them a press release, they're liable to print it verbatim. If they get a high placed unnamed source, they're going to quote it. The media are basically large corporations, supported by large corporations, so they're not going to print a lot of stuff that tells us that corporations should benefit the public and not just the stockholders.
Now, what the press does is not left libertarian, certainly, but they're not always right authoritarian either. They may have reporters that are pro-choice. They may make statements that disagree with the current administration. That leads people to say that the press is unrestrained. It is largely unrestrained, although there is a lot of pressure to be allowed in the White House press room, and Air Force 1 - things like that. However, a certain class of people owns the corporate media, so certain things are going to be off the table from the start.
quote:
As for the media being biased to a right slant...Well, I think we would have little problem showing extensive evidence for this theory, but I would only apply the results to three of the four major English speaking nations. Canada might be a wash. The remainder of the Western industrialized nations may slant in the other direction.
