I say, just leave it out until you get the new software, BA.
It will be two months or more before the new software goes online, so I don't want to keep things down that long. It'll go back up soon, maybe early next week.

Nonsense, Kristin. If I were the Russian in charge of the project, all non-Americans would simply have to sign a waiver. All Americans on the other hand, would have to be accompanied by their attorney, so in a worst-case scenario, they'd ALL die.
Seriously though, I'm not belittling the Challenger disaster, but anyone who thinks that space travel is a walk-in-the-park needs to be strapped to a centrifuge until their head clears.

I bet you could make money with that.
I thought the (Shuttle at least) launches were pretty much routine by now. Long, exhaustively double- and triple-checked routine, but routine nonetheless. Seems like they always plan contingency enough to make sure the bird flies and lands in the planned time period, anyways. Haven't heard anything untoward about the russkie launches lately, either, but that might just be the sites I read.
Seems to me the most challenging part of the whole deal would be making sure that eccentric unstable people don't end up in a place where they could do damage (and that risk would of course increase as more civilians paid up) even though the training would likely weed most of those out.
I like listening to myself talk too much I think.

Well, it looks like they finally closed Piper's thread on the Straight Dope Board (after 8 pages, and Piper's 111 posts) but now they got a bozo that wants to outlaw the Big Bang Theory...

You lasted longer than many of us would have, BA, and I appreciate it. And I'm sorry that you felt you had to take the step you did.
Here's hoping that things blow over and you are comfortable with bringing back that wonderful forum soon.
PS: And welcome to KaptainK and Russ!

BA, it's a shame you had to do that, but I see your point. Trish and I have talked about what we'd do if trolls ever showed up here. For a long time I was a real fence sitter on the whole issue. Then I got a look at (he who I shall not name) over on the SDMB. Hoo boy, did that erase all doubts! If (he who I shall not name) shows up here, watch Lisa jump on the "delete" with both feet. You're either a nicer person than I am, or more patient. Maybe both. The fact that you let some of the nonsense go on for as long as you did shows you have more restraint than I could ever muster. The new Snitz 3.3 (SFN is on 3.14R) has some amazing moderation features. Requiring people to at least register before posting helps, too.
What sort of requirements do you have for your server? SFN has a license for UBB (Ultimate BB) that Kil paid for and might let go since we no longer need it.

To the Atomic/Bad Astronomer conspiracy:
Darn (really another unprintable, and naughtier, word)!! I was all prepared to pepper the BABB with nothing but astronomy (perish the thought) and to suggest that everybody else do the same in order to drive away the rampant negativity. I am slowly learning who the nasty trolls are and, eventually, will avoid them like the plague. Of course, that would have been negativity, itself, on my part.
Darn!! That *word* wants to come out of my keyboard again... Be still, loquacious (naughty) typing fingers...
Incidentally, on top of my being unable to access BABB, I could not access Skeptic Friends, or JREF Forum. All skeptic sites were down. Perhaps it is/was a big Creationist or Apollo Fools conspiracy, I'm telling you.
I do believe that if everybody would ignore them, they would go away. They want attention.
Well, Skeptic Friends Network is *all better* tonight, so at least one great site is open. Going to all of the skeptic and scientific sites was really wearing me out. My brain does not recuperate that easily... Besides I need the sleep, I suppose. They frown on my sleeping at work...

Yes I noticed the JREF boord was down, too. Looks like they have similar problems. It's sometimes a problem trying to run a complex site without direct access to the server. If I had such access I can tell you SFN would be down very seldom. Yesterday all I needed was someone to hit the reboot button and the phone support person told me that there was no one there that could handle it!!! Reboot?? Hello??

Phil- Sorry to see you finally had to shut down the board (at least temporarily), but perhaps it's for the best. The dialog kept descending to the level of Peewee Herman ("I know you are but what am I") on just about every topic in recent weeks (hence, my hasty retreat). I look forward to a new board design and some calmness and sanity, but will likely be more of a lurker in the future.
By the way, after looking at the posts on straightdope.com, does Sea Sorbust seem familiar? This buffoon sounds suspiciously like JW to me, but perhaps I'm seeing JW's style of "classy" argument in my sleep.

@tomic:
We all miss you so much when you are *down and out* or is it *down* and *offline*. It is not *out of sight, out of mind* with any of us.
Look, when you are down, there are books to read. I have a huge library (for an apartment) and little time in which to read (what with a 10-hour work day, including transportation) and my weekends being taken up with so many activities. Sleep? Forget it. As Shakespeare's Hamlet said, *To sleep, perchance to dream. Now, there's the rub.* (I think I remember this snippet correctly.)
Anyway. Last night was just dreadful. So, you see how much-loved you are. Keep playing *hard-to-get* like that and make us miserable. Sadist!!!

I just went over to straightdope.com and I went to the message board and I couldn't see the titles to the threads. There wasn't even a link to the threads.

oh great gosh, Lisa......now I gotta spend all that time looking through Piper's posts somewhere else???
At least his MO is different there...his followup posts are not carbon copies of his original introduction. He actually rewords some of his statements, and attempts coherent replies at times.
(Emphasis on the "attempts")
But it's still 10 pages of "I see visions, you don't, so you're alll delusional." |
