I've finally figured it out: anything JW says is a justified opinion; anything anyone else says is a personal attack.
It must be gratifying to be so certain of one's own opinions. |

I just had a crazy thought. What if someone with an e-mail that allows either filters or the ability to block certain addresses were to respond to JW, but not really respond, as in it would be a post akin to what Hub' posts. I wonder what JW's reaction would be?
Just an idea...

Well, hotmail lets you divert certain addresses to junk mail.

Hello People, (-:
I noticed that the BABB is completely missing tonight (09/03/01). (Not even a link listed on the BA home page!) Could the BA be installing the new BB software? (Though I think he said it would be a month or so away.)
By the way, I appreciate Dog_Ed's beautifully constructed post on superluminal motion. I wanted to copy it for further study. Hope it's there when the bord returns. Guess I'll just have to go back to playing Schubert Sonatas tonight. (-;

*gasp* Wow, just got back from vacation... I take it I missed a bit?
Sorry it went so far down the drain, BA. Hope it's not stressing you unduly :)
[BABB front page] To all readers of the Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board: I have taken the board temporarily offline. There have been too many attacks, insults, baiting and flames. While I am a strong supporter of the United States Constitution and of the First Amendment in particular, this does not mean I have to allow people to act this way on my website.
The board will remain offline for a few days, until I feel that people have had some time to calm down.
The board is meant to be a place where people can carry on a civil discussion of astronomy. I hope that this can once again become the norm, and not the exception.

When I went to work yesterday around 1500 the board was up and seemed no more flameworthy than usual. Got home around 2300 and the board was down. What did I miss? Lisa

I can't speak for the BA, of course, and I hope he checks in--but my feeling is that it was a cumulative sort of thing. Maybe the new software will allow him to slap a [marked-for deletion-off-topic] tag on any post or reply, meaning that the software will automatically evaporate the text after 1 day (allowing the poster time to copy it for his/her own purposes if he/she wants). We can all see the BA's dilemma, though, since the board is not a general-purpose one but discussions tend to wander off into non-astronomical minefields anyway.

Yes, it was acumulative thing, but there was also a post from someone who is usually not combative, and it was definitely a bait.
So, to put it bluntly, I've had it. I shut it down to let tempers cool.
I have no new software, though I am still looking.

I say, just leave it out until you get the new software, BA. Leave it out because this software has given you plenty of headaches and besides, you'll have to take it out again later when you're ready to put in the new software. It'll allow more time for people to cool down, maybe even send the HB's to bug someone else.

Well, now I feel really bad about my behavior last week. I'll admit at the time, and compared to what JW was posting, I didn't think it was all that bad, but that is no excuse.
I hadn't even read the BABB since friday and was rather shocked when it was gone... I thought I'd better cool it. Looks like you had the same idea Phil.

Hi everybody. I'm here because I am suffering severe BABB withdrawl. I would have joined sooner or later, the shutdown of the BABB just precipitated the move. I like what I've seen so far. I'll be back |

Geez. I can't leave you people alone for 10 days without breaking something.
Southeast Oregon desert + 2500m mountain + no lights or light pollution + after moon set + natural hot spring (2m x 2m x 1.5m) + Gin and Tonics = fantastic star watching.

I try to slip away for a couple of days and look what happens! Y'all start dukin' it out over on the BABB, TBA shuts it down and removes my only reason for gettin' on the WEB.
Thank heaven Kristin invited me here so I can get my astronomy chat fix. So what's the current astronomy topic? |

(This is usually a spot to vent about trolls, but since there aren't any to be had...) The earth is greening up north, Russia wants to start a for-profit space platform and I just bought a used astronomy and cosmology textbook!(Astronomy and Cosmology, Fred Hoyle, 1975. Anyone else read that?) I think maybe Russia has the right idea, but *crosses fingers* it could get oh so ugly if something went wrong. I'm too young to remember the Challenger backlash.
Bozola: sounds like your vacation was (maybe) more fun than mine :) Margaritas, Northwood lake and hunting for wedding reception spots.
