No, HC is American. It's Peter Jennings-- whom Safire suggested would be a Dem VP candidate (no one, to my mind, has ever suggested this)-- who's foreign-born. |

Ah, yes. I realised that seconds after I posted it... thanks, though. |

Well, Wendy, looks like the New York Times' own word-wonk/conservative echo-chamber mouth piece Bill Safire has added his two cents in his op-ed for today (you'll need to log in (it's free) to the paper's website to read the piece).
Thanks for the link, Cuneiformist. I enjoyed reading the article, though my mouth did fall open occasionally.

He argues that Article II of the constitution "makes all naturalized citizens - including taxpayers, voters, servicemembers - slightly less than all-American."
It's this point of view (and my conflict with it) that originally caused me to begin this thread. I am aware (as filthy, Valiant Dancer, and Dude have posted here) that the founding fathers had very good reasons for the stipulation. The thing is, I feel like a hypocrite bitching about the loss of personal freedoms while still clinging to a provision that smacks of racism. I can't help but think the oft quoted Franklin: "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" must apply here.

For Democrats, Evan Bayh or Hillary Clinton for president, Peter Jennings (Canadian-born) for v.p.
Yeah, that really is laughable! Hillary will not be elected President, whether she decides to run or not. I watched her do some interviews while I was in Arkansas, and I think she knows that. I believe it is extremely unlikely that a woman will be elected President during my lifetime.
Peter Jennings! Hell, why not Colin Mochrie?

Being wary is normal. I can understand it. Heck, I'd freak if someone born american decided to take over the brazzy presidency. Though I believe that, unless we didn't know it, it'd be very, very hard for him/her to pass through... unless he/she spoke portuguese fluently and with no accent (a feat I have yet to see accomplished by any foreigner), we'd know. |

Michael Moore suggested Oprah Winfrey. Both woman and of African descent, this would appeal to many of the people who wouldn't vote otherwise. Being as rich as she is already, money or power wouldn't be her motivator. She seems smart enough to stand on her own, and to take advice from people when she needs to. |

Agreed, but she has no experience in government. |

Neither does Arnold Schwarznegger, but that didn't stop him from becoming Governor. |

Sure, and Reagan has a similar story, but electing an inexperienced person to govern one state (even a very large one) is not the equivalent of electing that person to be President of the United States.
