There is this person I run into on occasion that believes Tesla was ostracized by the scientific community, that he created a form of anti-gravity, perpetual motion machines, and just about everything else you can think of thats strange. Yes, this would be the person that called me an amoralistic atheist that is responsible for the attack on the WTC and lifting the *spiritual* protection from the US by my very disbelief. Any suggestions besides violence and screaming or leaving the area?

When you argue with an idiot, you both look foolish. I suppose the old "Show me the evidence" will be completely useless as your opponent seems impervious to logic.
How about this one. I used it on a door-to-door Bible thumper who called me the spawn of Satan. "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus." It tends to shut them up. So does "Judge not lest ye be judged." And asking them how they get special dispensation from the tenenants of the Bible.
That's right. Hold them accountable to the wording of their own document. They have no recourse. It's soooooooo sweet.

I saw a funny comment on this by comedian Louis Black. He said that he got home there was a phone message on his machine from God. God said it was really people like Jerry Falwell. Something like that...

Actually he doesn't believe in Jesus but some form of misconstrued Buddism.
Here's his explanation for WTC being the fault of atheists and gays and lesbians et al:
Homosexual activity is against the creative forces of the universe because they do not create. Men drive their force into the ground and women are culpable because their life forces go up. And atheists just plain kill the life forces of the universe because they have no faith. But all morals in the world [ultimate morality] comes from this creative universal force. By not believing in or following the creative forces of the universe it is a perversion of the moral force of the universe.
The guy is strange.

WITSFDH does that mean?

Trish,
Perhaps you could gently suggest to him to use something other than the missionary position.

This guy is not a Buddhist. This has nothing to with Buddhism. This guy is a A number one nutcase. Might I suggest a restraining order before he accuses you of bringing the aliens from sector nebula down upon us. Tell him that a Wiccan said that Athiests do not kill life forces as the force eminates from life itself not faith. faith can alter it, but not kill it. As for homosexuality, the energies are different not inharmonius. I have stood in circle with homosexuals so I am speaking from experience.
Morality comes from man. It may be thought to be inspired by the divine, but ultimately it is tainted by man's influence. His stance is a perversion of Buddhism.
These two arguements, based in something resembling his faith, may be effective. If not, watch him for violence. As Jimmy Spencer says, "He ain't worth your sweat."

Well, I'm no profiler, but sounds to me like some guy who is desperate to come out of the closet, feels guilty about it, was raised Christian, left that, feels guilty, fabricated his own quasi-christian but new-agey religion and spends too much time talking to plants while listening to Enya records.
Seriously, this guy is a wack job. Break off contact and, if he still shows up, tell the cops you have a stalker. Don't wait for signs of violence-- if you see those, it's probably too late.

That sounds very close to what Jerry Falwell said recently. Didn't Falwell also accuse one of the TellyTubbies of moral depravity?
Concerning Tesla, here's a spinoff question: Go into any bookstore with a science section, and you'll find several books about Tesla, heavy on the mumbo jumbo and "UFO" stuff. However, Tesla as a "real" scientist wasn't he? So is there a book somewhere about the real Tesla and what he really did and didn't do?

Perhaps your 'friend' is not so far off. Have either of you bothered to read or study anything about the man(Tesla) before judging. I saw a programe about Tesla a while ago on PBS, I don't recall everything but he was a true scientist and inventor. In later life he got a little weird, as I recall. He was critized by others for saying he thought he contacted outer space alians. Maybe that's what they guy was talking about. If you want to know more I could look it up for you or so could you. Hope that helps. nlm

But Tesla never submitted anything for peer review as far as science is concerned (that I'm aware of). Even so, the claim is the US gov stole all of his research and won't disseminate it for study.

I thought tesla was more of an engineer than a scientist.

Tesla was also very strange and a bit of a recluse. However, his alternating current has beaten out Edison's direct current (even though not in his lifetime). I understand that Edison (being a businessman and not a scientist) put every roadblock he could in the way of alternating current. Of course, he lost over the long run.

Now, as far as loonie tunes go, I would let them rant and rave all that they want. Just know enough to steer clear of such idiots in any real-life meeting. And I would not worry about the placing of blame. It is well recorded throughout history that people of differing religions tend to murder and pillage in the very name of those differing beliefs.
I do not see that non-religious scientists have contributed to the bloodshed and mayhem found naturally occurring between the hordes of religious nuts.
When you get such a nut posting to you, turn off all replies, ignore the nut, and let the nut rant and rave all he/she/it wants. In real life, stay far away from such lunatics, because they are nuts and are really dangerous people who are *off their medication*.

Unfortunately ljbrs, I deal with this nutcase in real life. I wish it were on the web.

I really feel for you. Crazies can be very dangerous. Perhaps you could act as if you were beginning to agree with him and let him feel secure that you are unthreatening to his very core of beliefs. Perhaps he might back off. Of course, that would mean being untruthful, but how else can one be around nutcakes? Then again, that could only make matters worse...
Good luck...
