Right now, I just smile alot and nod in a noncommital manner until he leaves, or maintain my nose in whatever book I happen to be reading at the time. Right now I am reading a good book.

Good! That ought to keep him at bay. Just be entirely non-threatening. People whose emotions have problems need assurance that nothing is threatening.
Just keep it up. He will never change, but you are at the controls. Hopefully, he is not your boss.
Anyway, I am glad to hear that you have taken the reins in this situation and that he is behaving himself. He probably had a *thing* for you or something like that.
