And Big Brain, you've become real boring. Coincidentally, I think that you are one of the biggest idiots I've ever run across.
Will you EVER answer the question about if there are satellites in orbit? Your continued avoidance proves that you are a fraud, a liar, and a friggin' moron. And yes, that was a completely ad hominem attack. |

You are too modest, my friend; the best flipper is you. When are you going come up with anything but hand-waving, unsupported and even downright silly claims, and asinine statements?
Damn, my house 'possum holds up his end of a discussion better than you by never saying anything. Yeesh!
Huzzah! 14 pages! Soon we will have this nonsense locked and then can enjoy the delicious anticipation of waiting to see what bbbb comes up with next. I'm betting that it will be exactly the same as all of the rest of these tired and worn-out threads.
Any takers?

I learned that this "flip" is a not-uncommon problem with Harriers.
The Harrier is designed for all sorts of things which don't necessarily go well together - VTOL, high-speed flight, combat maneuverability and survivability, reliability and reusability - and it has to do them all in all sorts of nasty weather.
The LM, on the other hand, was designed for: reliability. And it had to do its job once, without contending with wind, salt water, birds, hostile fire, or pitching carrier decks. It was designed with the engines mounted as close to the CM as reasonable, the mass concentrations as far from the CM as reasonable, and the RCS thrusters as far out as reasonable. This means it was also inherently pretty stable with large moments of inertia, with off-axis thrust effects minimized for the main engine and maximized for the control thrusters, just the way you want it. Oh, and a nice, reliable, wide-footprint, heavy-shock-load landing gear.
I have to believe the LM was much easier to fly than the Harrier is. |

Well, while we're on the topic of VTOL, and since the original idea of this thread isn't worth the air I excreted while reading it: I would love to hear what you guys think of the possibility of a helicopter/fixed-wing hybrid. I read an article in my childhood predicting how these vehicles would replace trains and buses to a large extent with a flying mass-transit/taxi service, by 2020 no less. It was inspiring, but is it feasible?
A quick google gave me this article on the subject http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/x-50.htm. It seems outdated and poorly spelled though...

Well, there is one, of sorts.

the roter is not powered but acts as a sort of rotating wing, and it is powered with a pusher propeler. They've been around for a long tme, but have never been pratical for anything but recreation.

There's a reason we called the things Scarriers. On vertical take off if the engines or wing are slightly misaligned in power output or off center it can (read most likely will) cause the aircraft to flip. I've never seen one flip, but I was at Toro not Yuma where they're flown. I have however, seen one blown into the nose radome of one of my A-6's, not pretty. |

There is the Osprey. Though it's been grounded because the rotor ring that rotates the wing is inadequate for the design purposes. The wing itself apparently needs re-engineered. But then again, if they'd actually design the entire thing in the same engineering facility instead of piecemeal, it might have worked right the first time. |

You don't understand anything about gravity forces of aircrafts. http://www.hobby-lobby.com/piccolo-accessories.htm Scroll down to Training landing gear for Piccolo.
Helicopters are easier to fly if the forces of gravity are distant from CG. About LM, forces of gravity are too close to CG and for this reason it's uncontrollable. If you weld a larger training landing gear on your coke can, you will be able to balance it on your finger tip. |

Excellent! Here's one on problem solving and how simple it can be -- take note, bbbb:

You refuse to understand that there are some major differences in the physics between the lunar module landing on the moon and any aircraft on earth. When you have correctly identified to us the two greatest ones, perhaps we can still find some common ground.
By the way, now I understand what kind of helicopter you fly. With your level of knowledge about physics, you would never had gotten a real flight certificate. Not without a very handsome bribe. |
