Somebody explain Nick's post under my "A question for the BA"
And yes, I realize I'm probably taking this too personal and getting too upset about it... grrrr

Okay, I ran over for a look. I get the impression he thinks just my mentioning Hoagland, we're giving him publicity. I can't agree with him. Even though I'm new to the BA board, I've been a skeptic for a long time. I'd already heard of the Hoaxter, and had just put him in the same category as fundies, UFO abductees, and John Edward. Nutcases, and not worth my time. However, there's young people on the board, and perhaps some non-posting lurkers who are seeing this for the first time. Education is the key here. Teach them early what kind of fairy-dust Hoagland's theories are, and you don't have to sort out 1000 misconceptions later. BTW, I keep reading that Hoagland claims to be a former NASA. I know this is a silly question, but has he ever offered anything like proof? Lisa

I've never seen anything but "former NASA employee" on his sites. But I haven't seen any proof against this claim either.
All his other claims (the 'award' he won, the 'fact' he was the first one that came up with the europa oceans theory, etc) have been thourghly debunked though.
As for Nick, Hoagland gets me riled up and I go to the BA board to let off steam. I guess the fact that is is so transparent that it's utter garbage YET he still has a huge following is what gets me going.
I think not saying anything about how stupid his ideas are is bad and I don't understand Nick's point at all. It's a BAD astronomy board after all. I thought the whole point was to point out these loons.
As tiresome as the moon hoax argument was getting. I never once thought people should stop talking about it... (although I joked about how i wish it would go away, which is completely different, lol)
If you want to make your stomach turn, just go over to Hoagland's board sometime and read what his followers say...
As for not being worth our time, I agree, lol. BUT we HAVE to debunk this stuff...

Yeah, but in my last job I would have spent 100% of my waking hours debunking. There's more important things. Beer leaps to mind. The cast of characters over about 2 years(remember people PSC in and out): 3 Fundies, they were fun in a novelty sort of way. One guy who swore bigfoot was real, and the reason there's not more evidence is that Bigfoot is "trans-dimentional", he even dropped $165 at eBay for a plaster cast of a Bigfoot footprint. One girl who broke out her checkbook whenever she saw one of those ads "Lose 20 lbs in a week!!!", and I never could get her to check out the Quackwatch site. And the one who sent me into flames the fastest - The Art Bell Fan. "Oh wow", he'd say "this guy just ROCKS!" And people wonder why I tend to be just the tiniest bit high-strung. Lisa

Rift:
I'm not certain that Nick was referring to your posts on the BA board
but rather to the periodic post by people who espouse his views

Gee Lisa, at my last job I had to try and explain sublimation to an engineer. He didn't understand the concept of water going from solid to gas without stopping at liquid first. Fighting three engineers on the subject was tough. If hadn't been for the moon hoax stuff would never have known where to look on the subject.
Rift, do worry about Nick. I sat there cussing at the TV when Hoaxland was on Mysteries of the Unexplained. But thats on PAX, a christian friendly channel. Guess they really have an agenda to disinform the public and make science seem contrary.

Nick is a familiar type, the "ignore them and they'll go away" folks. They also say things like "responding to this garbage only gives it credibility." I really don't understand this attitude. Are these people not aware that the pseudoscience con-artists have the kind of media access that we can only dream about? When Fox ran its moon hoax-hoax, I took the time to write to our local Fox affiliate and suggest that they make some kind of effort to rebut the program, or at least to acknowledge that there was some well-informed opposition to the HB's claims. The result was a 2 minute local news segment about local moon hoax debunkers. It wasn't much, but, without it, the local TV audience would never have heard that the Fox program omitted some important facts, or that there was any non-governmental opposition to the claim. Ignoring commercial kooks like Hoaxland will not shut them up and it will not deny them an outlet, it will just make their job easier by leaving the audience ignorant of opposing views.

Get a very powerful radio transmitter, feed a TV signal in and take over your local FOX broadcast next time they run the moon hoax.
You should be able to do a simple slide show on it, with computer generated voice-over for explanation.

Don't suppose there's much I can do with my local Fox station. They jump in with both feet, showing cattle mutilations and video of UFOs that look suspiciously like mylar baloons. Course, they blow the vid up so far all you can see are a few really big silver colored pixels. Think it's hopeless here in Denver!

Speaking of hopeless, Piper is back on the BA board. Now he's ranting how history will show that the enlightened people who believe in advanced civilizations on Mars were right all along. Just waiting for the flames to start. Lisa

Does anyone else find it odd that so many posts on this board are solely discussing things going on on another board? Or is it just me?
Not a criticism, just an observation.
