For me, I have just listen to two incredible speeches. A perfect consession speech by John McCain, he said all of the right word and achieved the right tone. And an incredibly inspirational speech by Barack Obama. A powerful speech from the heart about hope and unity. This is the first presidential election to have had such a positive effect on me. I am gaurdedly excited and hopeful. |

I am delighted beyond measure, for many reasons. Imagine - an inspiring, well-spoken, intelligent, & thoughtful person as our president-elect!
I don't think it's too cynical, though, to think that Obama would very likely have lost if not for two unexpected & unique factors over the ~6 weeks before the election: (1) the US economy providentially tanking, and (2) McCain's VP choice turning out to be so blatantly unqualified in a manner which the electorate simply couldn't ignore. See the national trend chart at pollster.com. McCain's #s rise in August & early September, then turn down when the economy does. The Couric interview was ~10 days later, solidifying his downturn. |

Congratulations, my fellow Americans! You finally have a president that doesn't suck. At least, not so much. |

We will see what he can do. I wonder how he will govern, toward the center like he campaigned or on the way left as he has voted in the past? I did like that he was campaigning for the next election already when he said that we cannot get everything done in one term. Kind of lets himself off the hook. |

What did he vote for that was "way left?" When he voted for immediate withdrawal of the troops from Iraq and Afghanistan?
Or maybe it wasn't a vote that you're talking about. Maybe it was when he stood on the Senate floor and demanded the release of the hundreds of thousands of people in prison who are there largely because they are poor people, and people of color? When he derided Hillary Clinton for working with corporations to try to achieve health care for all instead of working towards a European, or Canadian-style system? When he talked about how he was going to crack down on corporate crime? When he cried out to the House to ask them to begin impeachment proceedings against the criminals in power, and the investigation of the other living President's crimes? When he refused to agree with the bailout of the wealthy? When he said, even though this his election is a significant event in race relations in the U.S. that we still had a long way to go to repair the damage done? When he rejected the idea of turning the Presidential pulpit in to minister's pulpit? When he talked about the damage that so-called capitalism has done to the world/
Which thing did he do to make you think he was far left?

My daughter and I were listening to McCain's concession speech. She remarked about how gracious and reasonable a speech it was. I agreed with her that the words were wonderful, but I told her that the contrast between that speech and everything he, Palin, and their surrogates have said and done in the campaign was quite vivid. I asked her why I should believe McCain's graceful words now, if he'd spoken in a diametrically opposite way just hours earlier.
No. McCain spoke the vicious lies the fundies wanted him to speak in order to try to win. Now he says the things he knows he must say to try to rescue his legacy. There is no honor, no honesty, in the man. He is driven only by whatever he thinks is useful from hour to hour. He presided over the most vicious Presidential campaign in my 63 years of life.
Fuck John McCain's legacy, and fuck him, too.

I would say that was just a symptom of the real number 2 (no pun intended). A very very very poorly run campaign with clearly and significant fractures in his own party.
