Thanks for the kind words all. I think this has been a strange time for many-- in fact many more than I thought.
I'm a little embarrassed because my only intent in my reply to Rift was to let Rift know that I had some empathy for what he was going through, not to draw people's attention to my problems. Still, I thank all of you.
I am, at this point, doing just fine. I have my sense of humor back and I think I have begun making peace with everything.
This is a great group of people to spend time with, and, Rubysue, I echo what the others have been saying.
This is definitely off-topic for a "bitch" board!

I think you said that it was really Ok for me to express my worries about my dad. Especially with the insurance screwing around and not wanting to pay for the hospital the doctor wants. If anything goes wrong on this surgery - he could wind up paralysed. That would be devastating for him - his worry is he's not going to make it.
Sorry, he was supposed to have surgery on Fri and it was cancelled, then they said Wed and it's been cancelled. They're going to do it now at the VA hospital.

Trish,
Hang in there, this has to be a pretty rough time for you. Do I remember right that your husband is in Qatar right now, or am I mixing you up with someone else? If so, it's doubly tough, even if you are used to him being off in dangerous places (I would surmise from the fact that you often relate Marine lore that he is a Marine-- I work for the Army, but the PhD in the next office is a retired Marine and I have great respect for the work they do).
I sincerely hope everything comes out ok.

Folks-
First, to all of you who have gone through so much these past few weeks, my heartfelt sympathy for you. It's hard enough dealing with the lunacy of the world, but personal difficulties make it so much harder... and we've all had those recently as well, it seems.
On to a lighter note...
I have downloaded and installed a new version of the BABB on the new machine. Currently, the machine has no domain name, but it does have an IP address, so it can be seen if you know the address.
I would like the folks here to point their browsers at the new BB and let me know what you think. It uses the phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com) software, which is pretty nifty. Without registering (which I don't want to open up yet) you can still see the forum topics and categories, and read the welcome message.
I am soliciting comments. Do I need another forum (like a subtopic), or a whole new category? How does the layout look? I welcome all constructive comments. Destructive comments you may leave at the door.
The new board address (for now): http://216.87.88.148/phpBB/ (the trailing "/" is important). Thanks.

Looks excellent, BA.
You might want to consider a "general forum" for topics that don't quite fit the definition of astronomy, but are still kinda close... like discussions in basic (astro)physics, science-fiction science (or lack thereof), and the like.
Then again, I suppose you want to encourage people to stay reasonably on-topic... there are other boards (like this one) for things that are further afield.
Without the ability to post to topics, it's not yet possble to evaluate the posting subroutine.
Overall, it looks great! But personally, I'd rather not see that animated icon for Webtrends. Is that a link to the site's host or something?

It's my webtracker; it counts how many hits I get and from where people come. It's very useful to see who my audience is in general. I get as many hits to the BABB as I do the rest of the site, and someday I may put ads up again. ;-)
And yes, I avoided a general science forum on purpose. Every other site has that, so I don't really feel the need.
I will open up registering to folks here before the general public too, to test the software. ;-) I want the site to have a real domain name first, and I am waiting for that. As far as I know the domain name switch is happening now, and will take effect Any Time Now.

Looks very nice. I like the category breakdowns too. Should be interestin gto see which areas get the most posts over time.
Question: If I were to post something from work and then go home and post something else, does it make any difference if I use my home email address from both locations? (-;

BA-
Your new BB looks great! Two quick questions about the rankings. When you get above 1000 posts, what happens? I know it won't happen any time soon, but I'm just curious. Also, would it be possible to switch two things? The edit and delete options. I say it should be possible to delete your posts forever and edit only up to 30 minutes after posting. That way, old words won't come back and hit you in the butt.

As long as you log in using your name and password, it doesn't matter from where you post (just like here at SFN).
The option to edit and delete are not changeable (unless I simply remove them), as far as I can tell. There isn't a lot of documentation to PHPBB, which is it's major drawback. The other is that you cannot preview your post; you have to post it and hope for the best, and then edit afterwards.

The new setup looks very cool, BA...I'd even go so far as to call it "groovy".
Another folder suggestion: a "News" folder...to talk about current breaking events. Or do you foresee posts like that going into the "General" folder?
Anticipating the switch... |

Yeah, for now I'll leave all that in 'general', and if there is too much traffic I can always split it and move the threads later.

The new board looks pretty good. But shouldn't the "Lunar Conspiracies" folder be labeled as "Loony Conspiracies"?

Phil,
The new setup is just great. I had looked at PHBBS for my Mind and Brain BBS, but didn't want to pay to add MySQL to my domain.
I really like the elegance of your design and I think you've carved the categories about right. I'm sure, however you can add, delete and cleave categories as the new BABB evolves.
It should, in fact, assuming everyone sticks to the rules, allow those who don't want to bother with (or be bothered by) the trolls and loons to avoid them completely, while those who enjoy the joust will know where to go.
I can't wait for the shift. Having moved from wwwboard recently myself, I missed the old way of doing things for about 24 hours. Now, I'd never go back.
Great job!

No, Lisa's husband is in Qatar right now. She just got him back from Oman maybe three months ago. That's the military tho.
I'm actually a single mom. Trying to do the best I can and deal with everything without much support from outside sources.

BA, like the new forum. Now, when will it be ready for action?
