Thought about replying to that myself, but I'd have droned on too long. Yours is better.

Stop! I better leave now while I possess a shred of dignity.

My kids still love me.

Shouldn't that be "tittoos"?

Well, Lisa, the next time that one of them mentions that, and there Will be a next time, you could simply point out, that the early Astronauts really were "fried", and that they've all had, at least, 5 years taken off of their Life-Expectancy. That includes a few who have suffered untimely deaths in the past few years, all from Cancer, if I remember correctly!

If that doesn't work, you could always mention the Moon Trees, that always seems to shut them up, for a little while, anyway.

If you Ignore Your Rights, they WILL, go away.

This may help.
In SAMU's first post, when he said something like "I don't disbelieve we went to the moon, but...", I thought "oh lawsy, here we go again. I can't bitch too much, I'm learning a lot from everyone's replies. That's the whole reason I read that board anyway.
If he bothers you that much, just ignore him. Don't even open his posts. He may rant, but after a while, he'll go away.

Yeah, I know, I know...

But he's the kind of poster that gets under your skin like a fly egg, and next thing you know he's gnawing away at your flesh and popping out as a maggot...

Ewww, now I've grossed myself out...

Just let me know if I get too carried away, all right? I don't want the BA slapping down on me on account of some bozo HB...

haven't seen anything from you to indicate that you are close to the "too carried away" line

Good(bad?) news: SAMU has apologized for the military comment.

I don't care if he crawled on his knees through a swamp to apologize. That remark was way off mark and completely uncalled for. Sorry, I missed it originally. Thankfully I was prewarned.

Trish, I can understand your reaction. My jaw dropped when I read it too, and I'm not a vet -- I was a Vietnam-era protester, but a bit too young to have to back up my convictions with actions (like burning a draft card or heading north).

The weird part is that there wasn't even a whiff of a logical rationale behind the comment. Set aside the problem of NASA not being a military organization, and Apollo having no connection with the military. In the 60's, it wasn't an all-volunteer military. Doesn't he realize that most Vietnam vets were draftees? And that some volunteers did so because they expected to be drafted, and wanted to choose a service assignment that minimized the possibility of going to the war zone? This is not such a dumb strategy.

But the bottom line is, the vast majority of volunteers did so out of a sense of patriotic duty, a feeling which is uncorrelated with intelligence (positively or negatively).

So again, I can understand your difficulty accepting the apology (though it did sound sincere). Not only was his remark offensive, it was irrational.

But on the other hand, I can think of times I've spewed out thoughtless and hurtful remarks that I've deeply regretted later. Maybe we should follow the BA's lead and give him this one bit of slack.

It may be moot; he seems to have gone into full retreat in the last day or two.
