Hook, You remember correctly. My father was a psychiatrist. But, he was not a "shrink" (i.e. couch, 50 minute hour, etc). His field was preventive psychiatry. Basically he held week-long seminars for CEOs to teach them how to keep their employees sane (at $3000 each) and then after dinner the last day of the seminar, he would clean them out at poker :)
Me... I'm a rediculously over educated fork-lift driver.

Gosh...I sit out a few days being sick, and then I come back and find that both Spoq and JW are now personae non grata!
And there was much rejoicing. |

Yup! Now if the BA will just ban John Kierein and his troll-like obsession with "Compton" redshift in the face of opposition from others who know the field better than he does (Keith, Karl and Spaceman Spiff to name a few).

John is unfailingly polite and quite willing to listen to the opposition. He has asked me several pertinent questions via email, and is honestly curious about the results. I doubt he will ever change his mind (about redshifts or ET life in molecular clouds), but he has never been rude, used bad language, called anybody names or gotten a hugely defensive/paranoid complex about the discussions, even when they are totally against him.
Despite JW's whining, I have never deleted a post because I disagreed with it, except for Spoq's Nostradamus post. I'm not going to start now.

John Kierien seems like a nice although curious character. He's definitely interesting, however, I hope people are willing to respond to his posts when someone asks questions in as reasonable a manner as John uses. Though, I've never seen anyone respond in anything but a reasonable manner.

He seems like a nice fellow. I think some of his posts are ummm...interesting though he sometimes tends to make odd sweeping statements without proof. (I've done that too, but at least it's good to say "I can't prove this.") I agree with the BA that Mr. Kierien is always polite. I also think he has had some kind of background with NASA and was involved with Skylab.
His wildest "theory" to me is the one about alien life inside dark interstellar clouds. Again, no method of proof offered, but he does draw attention to the fact that our perception of what alien life could be is based on terrestrial Earth-like planets. (Why not? Seems like the place to start.) Maybe, we're the oddballs, and "normal" life in the galaxy if very different. I just wish John would say "and here are experiments that might prove this..." (I don't know what that would be though (-;) Chip

Sounds like Winston Wu from the Sci.Sceptic Newsgroup. Did the BA delete the post, I couldn't find it? Winston Wu (they call him wu wu) has some interesting ideas to say the least. I think he's young and will make a good skeptic when and if he figures things out. He seems to think that people don't/won't lie and you can take eyewitness accounts as hard evidence...

Yep, looks like Phil gave that post the Order of the Boot. Rift, wondered where you'd been. I saw the whole Hoagland thing start up again, and I was sure you'd jump in. (This comment may have been overtaken by events. Haven't been to BA in 12 hours) Lisa

LOL, I almost did...
My mother has been in the hospital, and I've been busy. Last week she had surgery, and Friday she went into septic shock, and we thought we lost her. Damn that was scary. Anyway, she's doing better. But she hates hospitals and she's already tried to escape. They've put her in restraints, lol. We try to have somebody down there visiting with her most of the time so she won't do anything stupid...
Hoagland seems kind of irrelavent now :)
Well, more so then normal even, lol.

Rift, sorry to hear about your mother. I hope she's feeling better and everything is okay. lol she sounds like my mom. After heart surgery she was told she could leave the hospital as soon as she could walk three circuits of the floor unaided. "No mom, you have to take the breathing tube out first."
When that guy wrote in about Hoagland, wanting to know what we thought of him I almost answered "You're new here, aren't you?" Lisa

I'm trying my best to post some relevant and interesting stuff on there. Trying != succeeding, though.
